Joseph Harrop

Joe joined the UCF School of Music at Dartington having previously worked at the Royal Academy of Music, London and the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama. Alongside his academic work, his experience as a professional violinist across several genres informs his performance work - in both teaching and practice. This professional performance experience includes contemporary and mainstream classical music, historically-informed performance and Irish and Scottish traditional music. Born and raised in New Zealand, Joe studied violin at the University of Auckland and privately in Germany before completing his Masters degree and PhD at the Royal Academy of Music. Joe was part of the project teams for the AHRB-funded ‘What is a Violin?' and the EU-funded EASAIER projects. These ventures provided points of departure for Joe's interdisciplinary research and engagement with digital archive technology within higher and further education. His other areas of research are string quartet performance practice, rhetorical theory as a vernacular for music performance and developing effective pedagogical models for ensemble technique.
